Clematis × durandii — late flower and seed head, November 2025
END OF SEASON
I’m standing in the garden in November on a still, overcast day. Most of the summer flowers are over: clumps of perennials are dying-back and seed heads and hips dominate. But dotted about are a few final flourishes, some last minute floral-flag-raising, declaring, “where there is life there is hope”. In this short photography project, I wanted to capture some of these late-season renegades in all their imperfect-beauty.
NOVEMBER LIGHT
A casual photograph of a lingering sage flower insipred me to make this series. It’s purple spire was isolated against a blurry-background of a lightly shaded garden path. The blue-grey haze this created seemed to embody the November light perfectly: misty, steely-grey. In that cool diffuse light, colours were flat, muted; shadows soft. Yet the botanical detail was there: defined, purposeful. Peaceful. I think they make a nice series, shown together like this.
